Each year we get more people involved in our neighborhood activities, such as our neighborhood garage sale, block party and our various clean up days. We had a strong turnout on a sunny Saturday. Our members educated people about plants, discussed neighborhood issues and raised money to maintain the Goettingen Neighbors Garden. We had a celebratory dinner together when the work was done. It was an all-around success. We hope to see you at our plant sale next April!GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119752784271024308.post-59799834051690331482010-03-29T12:51:00.000-07:002010-03-29T13:03:46.068-07:00WEEDS GALLORE!!!Thanks to all the volunteers who helped us weed over the weekend. Though there is a lot more to do, a great effort was made. - Today brings more rain and in turn more weeds. ) : We have monthly clean-up days scheduled, usually towards the end of the month, so please look for those dates and come support your community garden for a hour or two. Please also tell your neighbors and friends about us and our upcoming 3rd Annual Plant Sale. In the next month, we'll need help potting plants, and soliciting and collecting donations. We invite anyone who is willing to help out to contact us at our email gngcore@gmail.com, one of us will answer any of your questions. If you have plants or starter plants that you would like to donate - you may drop them off to us or we can pick them up. We are also accepting gardening books, decor, or tools, or gently used items for our BIG raffle. Ciao for now and happy planting.GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119752784271024308.post-75392763070833706132010-01-25T19:42:00.000-08:002010-01-25T20:05:16.593-08:00Unfortunately our garden was badly hit by the recent storm. An old large Cypress Tree uprooted and fell. Several of our beautiful plants were damaged by the fallen tree. The City came to remove some of the tree limbs they thought posed a safety issue, and a couple of the neighbors worked over the weekend to remove more of the tree and roots, however, plenty more work left to do. Thanks Larry and Chris!

Eventually, new plants will be needed to replace those damaged. Stay tuned for further development and if you wish to give us a hand, please email us at gngcore@gmail.com. Also, heads up...we are in the planning stages of our next fundraiser - the Annual Plant Sale tentatively scheduled for last week of April 2010.GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119752784271024308.post-84644470118248038732010-01-03T16:15:00.000-08:002010-01-03T16:27:10.966-08:00In November 2009 the Goettingen Neighbors Group (GNG) welcomed a new addition to the Goettingen Community Garden - BIG BEAUTIFUL BOULDERS. Thanks to the SF Parks Trust Innovator Award, GNG was able to purchase several boulders for the top and bottom of the hill. The boulders totally complete the look of the garden - they look great. Thanks also to Paul from Broadmore Landscaping for helping us to stretegically place the boulders. Could not have done it without cha! What a big job, litterally. Please stop by to check out the new look of the garden and enjoy the beautiful view from the top of the garden.GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119752784271024308.post-44505845562381484992009-07-10T08:38:00.000-07:002009-07-10T08:41:40.734-07:00Block Party & Garage SaleSaturday, July 11th

Join us for our 3rd Annual Goettingen Street Neighborhood Garage Sale and Block Party.

A portion of the garage sale proceeds will benefit the Goettingen Neighborhood Garden!

Enjoy an afternoon BBQ and Ice Cream party with your neighbors.

Goettingen Street between Olmstead and Dwight Streets.GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119752784271024308.post-29833681209522707252009-04-06T19:57:00.000-07:002009-04-06T20:01:39.719-07:00Thank youThank you, Thank you, Thank you!

We had a fantastic plant sale on Saturday and we owe you all a great big thank you. Especially when that acknowledgement is given to you by the community and recognized by the Mayor of our great city, San Francisco. A couple of months ago, back in November 2008, Goettingen Neighbors Group (GNG) was recognized at the Neighborhood Empowerment Network’s 2008 NEN Awards. We shared an award with another group; we were chosen as “Best Community Building Project” for our Goettingen Neighborhood Garden Project!

The Neighborhood Empowerment Network (NEN) is the first of its kind partnership of city agencies, local non-profits and neighborhood organizations.

During this evening, we were also recognized as winners of a Community Challenge Grant. The funds from this award will be used to set the bib and hose for our water meter as well as continue our efforts to stabilize the hillside. The grant was awarded to us to install a water meter for the hillside; however, the water meter has been secured within the previous Fiskar’s grant we received last August. Perhaps we can use the funds to stabilize the hillside with edging along the staircase to keep the hill from eroding or maybe even the beginnings of another retaining wall at the extreme slope on the hill. We are still working out the details of the Community Challenge Grant, but hope to have them finalized in the next couple of weeks.

I have to agree with Mayor Newsom when he states, “ By celebrating what’s right in our communities and providing crucial resources directly to neighborhood groups to assist them in taking the lead in improving their quality of life, these two programs [The Neighborhood Empowerment Network and the Community Challenge Program] are ultimately making a difference in the lives of every San Franciscan.”

We are excited and motivated to continue our work throughout 2009!GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119752784271024308.post-44759222252238099062008-09-10T09:41:00.000-07:002008-09-10T11:30:53.147-07:00Thank You for a Beautiful GardenThis is an informal thank you to all those who contributed to the fantastic effort that transformed the hillside into a lovely neighborhood garden. Brightly flowering ground cover holds the fragile soil, while colorful vines and bold colors peek over new terraced walls.

The most amazing part: the entire transformation took just a single day – thanks to the combined efforts of a determined team. Fiskars joined with Lowe’s to bring nature back to San Francisco’s Goettingen neighborhood through Fiskars Project Orange Thumb initiative.

A team of over 50 tilled and planted from early morning to late afternoon at the revitalized garden site on August 26. The makeover included all donated labor, design time, project coordination, tools and all necessary supplies. Fiskars selected the Goettingen Neighborhood for this project and coordinated, developed, designed and managed the day long makeover. Lowe’s donated all planting materials and supplies for the project.

“The Goettingen Garden is the second in a series of national gardening projects for Fiskars. Our successful garden transformation in Chicago (May, 2008) proved the importance of gardening to provide beauty, sustainable food resources and a place of community,” said Paul Tonnesen, President of Fiskars.

Master Gardener Joe Lamp’l, nationally known as “Joe Gardener,” created a garden design that includes many native and drought tolerant species, such as Russian Sage, Purple Hopseed and Oakleaf Hydrangea.

“It has been a dream come true to be selected for the Fiskars Project Orange Thumb Program,” said Trish Winum, member of Goettingen Neighbors Group. “Goettingen Neighbors Group has worked together to make our streets safer, build community, and beautify our neighborhood. Fiskars has helped us meet our objectives while putting Goettingen Street, together with the Portola District of San Francisco, in the spotlight. It's been a fantastic experience.”

The San Francisco initiative is an extension of Fiskars’ successful Project Orange Thumb garden grant program. Started in 2003, Project Orange Thumb provides community garden groups with the tools and materials needed to reach their goals for neighborhood beautification and horticulture education. Most recently, Fiskars’ Project Orange Thumb successfully completed a garden makeover on Chicago’s south side in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood.

Fiskars Project Orange Thumb – San Francisco has additional support from: The City of San Francisco Department of Public Works, San Francisco Parks and Trust, Lowe’s, Radisson Hotels, United Industries, Hines Horticulture and the Goettingen Neighborhood Group.

To receive high-res photos or b-roll from the San Francisco garden event, please visit: http://gmedia.fiskars.com/sanfrancisco/media.

To receive high-res photos or b-roll from the Chicago garden event, please visit: http://gmedia.fiskars.com/altgeld.

Interview availabilities LIVE or via telephone 8/26 – 8/27/08

ABOUT FISKARS PROJECT ORANGE THUMB:

Since 2003, communities across the country have received more than $200,000 in tools, plants and expertise through Fiskars Project Orange Thumb. Designed to foster neighborhood pride, the grant program has helped to install rain gardens, establish neighborhood vegetable plots, and re-vitalize local parks, creating many beautiful, bountiful spaces that share hope, lift spirits and build community bonds. It has been an amazing journey these past few weeks working on this project.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves, let me start at the beginning. Approximately 6 weeks ago, Liz Lerma with DPW contacted Laura to set up a meeting. We had one day's notice to prepare for a meeting with DPW and a representative from Fiskars. The meeting went very smoothly as I thought that Laura and I projected the goals of GNG as well as our vision of building a nice community within the neighborhood for our families. The whole affair only lasted about 15-20 minutes. During the closing, I pointedly asked if there was anything left unsaid that would prevent them from awarding us the grant. I felt confident that we put our best foot forward and asked (specifically when a decision would be made. Luckily for us, it only take a day, any more time and I may have exploded from anxiety:) By 8:00pm the following evening, we received a phone call from Sandra with DPW to inform us that we were chosen for the Project Orange Thumb Grant by Fiskars.

I was so elated that I ran to Mikki's house in my slippers! Words can't describe how excited we all were. We shared a couple of glasses of bubbly as the news sunk in. Aligning the group with a respected fiscal sponsor was the first step in moving forward to revitalize the hillside. The Parks Partner program offers guidance in grant writing and fundraising, financial services, insurance, and administrative support.

The funds from grant awards and GNG's fundraising projects for 2008 will be used to install a water meter. With water in place, the next phase will be landscape design, irrigation installation and then the native plant restoration.

Updates will be posted regarding two of GNG's 2008 fundraisors, the Spring Plant Sale and a 5K run in McLaren this fall. We have just completed our first grant application and are anxiously awaiting the decision.GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1119752784271024308.post-86774776795669916272008-01-25T17:28:00.000-08:002008-01-25T17:29:59.500-08:00Gaining Momentum (written 9/07)Since the founding members started meeting over tea and scones, a lot has been accomplished. The first step toward making the hillside project come alive is to find an organization for fiscal sponsorship. The GNG discovered the SF Parks Trust and hopes to become a Parks Partner. In the coming weeks GNG will apply for the grant funds needed to install an irrigation system that will provide the water for the native plants to cover the hill.

Also, GNG is organizing a SAFE neighborhood watch group. The first meeting with David Chen was held last week. There is another informal meeting with the neighbors to complete the tasks needed to move forward. Please contact Mikki Salas if you would like to learn more about protecting our block.GNGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14094042347635324964noreply@blogger.com0
